Hey there Gang. Here's my situation. I do have a Bluetooth keyboard and I use it quite a bit. However, I'm getting used to typing on the screen and using dictation. Quite often, the on-screen keyboard is not visible. I know that I can press a key on my BT keyboard and make the on-screen keyboard pop up, but if I don't have the keyboard with me, how do I bring out the on-screen keyboard? I get in to an edit field and it says quick nav on. I can't type or dictate. I can go in to Braille screen input and type a letter or two, then delete it and then go back to words or characters and it usually works, but that's a long way around, not to mention time consuming when I just need to compose a quick reply.
Try this. Tap on the edit field where you are suppose to write the message.
Example, if I need to input a name, I tap the spot were the name goes, and the keyboard comes up on the bottom.
I saw something years ago.
What they said then is that VoiceOver is expecting the hardware keyboard. What I don't know is how to tell it to make the software keyboard visible. I just did some Googling and couldn't find it. I don't know if AppleVis will have that, or someone whose memory is now jogged will be able to explain it and how to fix it.
I know the bug Anthony is talking about. Scott has told me it's an iOS 10 bug that users of Braille displays have contended with for years. Yes, before iOS 10, double-tapping on the edit field would bring up the on-screen keyboard. Now that doesn't always work.
Does for me.
But I've never connected anything to the phone.
I wonder if something changes when you have Bluetooth devices connected then don't?
Could be a issue from device to device as Apple is known for too.
Suppose you turned off Bluetooth when you weren't using the devices?
Just some thoughts?
Oh, and I almost forgot.
Here's a bug I have.
If I use Skype, the 3D will work after, but I don't get the sensation of it working.
To fix this, I have to restart the phone.
So, what I am suggesting, is once you leave and are not using the Bluetooth devices, or to test it, I wonder if that would fix that issue?
Test it by disconnecting the devices, then restarting the phone.
Yes, Wayne, if you don't have anything connected to the phone, of course the double-tap gesture on the edit field will work for you. This is a bug involving Bluetooth Braille displays, and now Bluetooth keyboards.
Okay. Good.
As I understood it, Anthony here wishes to use his phone alone without his devices just by using the screen.
So, if so, he should be able to just tap as described?
Anthony, will you answer this??
Ok, Wayne. Let's see if I can make it more clear. If I don't have a Bluetooth keyboard paired, then sure, it works as you describe. Since you don't pair with a Bluetooth keyboard, this is something you'll not have experienced. I've even tried turning Bluetooth off and restarting the phone. It doesn't always fix it and when time is crucial and I need to respond, say before I go in to a restaurant with friends or something else of that nature, it takes too long to fiddle with it. When I double tap on the edit field, it says Quick nav on, as I stated in the original post. there's no keyboard to be found, which also means there's no dictate button either. About the best I can do in this situation is tell Siri to send a text to the person, so that's why I posted here and in other places, looking for an answer.
If you get any better answers in any of those other places, let me know. As far as I'm aware it's a bug that we're waiting not so patiently for apple to get off their butt and fix...but maybe someone has found a work-around I don't know about.
No, I haven't found one. The only thing I've discovered that does seem to help is to hit the eject key on your keyboard, at a time when you're not in an app with an edit field. Do that before you turn the keyboard off. It's iffy, but seems to work most of the time. It won't say anything. If you're in a situation where there's an edit field, the pressing of the key will toggle whether the on-screen keyboard is hidden or visible, but it seems to have no baring on how it'll behave once the keyboard is off.
Yes, I understood the issue, I just had no idea of the things you'd done to solve it.
One other suggestion.
If you hold the power button and the home button down at the same time, this clears the phones cache. It is a bit different from restarting the phone.
Now, on the model 7, instead of the phone shutting down for a second, it makes a sound that indicates it has cleared.
Try this after you've disconnected from your devices.
It feels a bit tricky as well due to the home button on the 7 not being a physical button.
Mighht not work, but easy to test.
Try turning Bluetooth off for a second. maybe it will force iOS to quit looking for your keyboard. or right before you disconnect it, bring up the onscreen keyboard, then while its up and in front of you turn off your keyboard. also, forgetting the keyboard and repairing it tends to clear bugs like that, at least for me.
